About Marcus

12 Years of Financial Education

Marcus started his career as a financial advisor at a major local bank in 2012. Thing is, he noticed something that changed everything—most young adults didn’t need fancy investment strategies. They needed help with the basics: budgeting, spending less, and not getting buried in debt.

That realization pushed him to switch careers entirely. He completed his Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning from the Hong Kong Institute of Financial Planners in 2015 and hasn’t looked back. Over the past seven years at SmartSpend Academy Limited, he’s built curriculum that’s now taught in secondary schools and community centers across Sha Tin and the New Territories.

His two biggest courses—”Budgeting for Your First Job” and “Breaking Free from Consumer Debt”—have reached over 8,000 young adults. And he’s not done yet. Marcus genuinely believes that financial stress comes more from poor habits than low income, so he focuses on teaching frameworks that stick. Real Hong Kong case studies. Practical strategies. No fluff.

Philosophy

Why His Teaching Works

Marcus doesn’t believe in generic advice. Every situation is different—your salary, your family obligations, your local costs (Sha Tin rent isn’t the same as rural New Territories). His courses use real Hong Kong case studies. MTR commuters. Property renters. First job earners. People you actually know.

He focuses on behavior, not just theory. You could memorize a budgeting formula, but that won’t help if you’re spending emotionally or don’t understand your own patterns. That’s where the behavioral economics comes in. Once you see why you spend the way you do, change gets easier.

Most importantly, he meets you where you are. Whether you’re earning your first salary or trying to climb out of debt, there’s no judgment. Just frameworks you can start using this week.

“Financial stress doesn’t come from earning too little. It comes from not knowing where your money goes. Once you understand your spending—the why behind it—everything else gets clearer.”
